History:

Originally part of the land inhabited by the Aboriginal Turrbal clan, the Wilston area began to develop from the late 1880s to the mid-1920s.  Although the area has recently seen a great deal of modern architectural development as a result of several Brisbane restoration initiatives, these suburbs receive their name from the first significant architectural structure built in the region- the Wilston House.  So named after its builder’s birthplace, the Wilston home, built in the mid-1870s came to serve not only as an icon of the original architecture of the area, but also a center for a good deal of the area’s history.  Over the decades, this home came to be the residence of several important individuals.  These included James Tolson, who carried out critical research in chilling mutton, a key export for the area to Great Britain, and Queensland’s police commissioner of the time, Major General William Cahill, under whose ownership the house also became a bird sanctuary.

Within the span of a decade, the area gained several more permanent residents, and began to develop as a housing district for Brisbane. However, it was not until the land’s ownership changed to the hands of John Stevenson MLA, who portioned the area into smaller divisions available for development, that the area became suburbia. This land division stimulated the area’s growth, resulting in a great deal of the older architecture that can still be found in Wilston today.  This growth was furthered by another development project from 1924-1931, which created a number of estates that were used to allow for additional housing.

Another notable architectural feature is the well-preserved Oakleigh colonial house at 17 Murray Street, which was the home of George Murray, one of Brisbane’s police magistrates and postmasters.  In addition, the Zoeller house, built in1905 at 29 Murray Street, is another iconic architectural point.  Both these locations were converted to large party settings and served as wedding reception and function venues until the mid-1990s.

Real Estate and Design:

The Wilston area has attracted a wide variety of residents due to its excellent locale within the inner city, superb views of the skyline of Brisbane from Wilston Hill, and recent shopping and alfresco dining that have resulted from the Kedron Brook Road renovation.  The area has also become a very attractive area for many medical professionals to call home due to its short distance from a number of medical centers, including the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.  Houses in the region range from historical cottage settings to more modern and diverse architectural feats built on the hillside.  According to recent census, the area has become the locale of choice for many, as approximately 60% of all homes are owned, as opposed to only 35% of the homes being rented.

Shopping:

Nearby Wilston Village is a refreshing commercial area with shopping venues and attractions for every taste. Only three kilometers from CBD, and well within an easy stroll from the Wilston Train system’s station, the Village has become a wonderful area for locals to stroll about, enjoying the wide selection of health, fitness, and housewares stores as well as a number of spas and salons.  On top of this the center also has an excellent selection of dining options ranging from cafés and bakeries to Asian cuisine and gourmet pizza offerings.  Also nearby are the HomeZone center at Windsor and centers at Stafford and Brookside.
