West Leederville is an established residential area.
West Leederville is bounded by the Mitchell Freeway in the north and east, Loftus Street and the railway line in the south and Salvado Road, Stent Lane, Dearle Lane, Wrightson Lane, Ruislip Street, Kavanagh Street and Lake Monger in the west.
West Leederville is named for its location, west of Leederville.
Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s, although population was minimal until the late 1800s.
Growth took place during the 1890s, spurred by the opening of the railway station.
This was the earliest area of subdivision in the Town of Cambridge.
Rapid expansion continued into the 1930s.
Many houses were redeveloped in the post-war years, with much medium density housing built in the 1960s and 1970s.
The population has increased since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly from the Hill of Tara estate.
Major features of the area include St John of God Hospital, Lake Monger Reserve, the Catholic Education Centre and one school.
