Southern River is a developing residential area, with substantial rural areas.
Southern River is bounded by the suburb of Huntingdale, Holmes Street, Southern River Road and Wungong Brook in the north, the Tonkin Highway in the east, Ranford Road in the south, and Warton Road in the west.
Southern River is named after the river which runs through the area.
Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s, with land used mainly for farming, market gardening and orcharding, and later dairy and stud farming.
The area remained rural until the late 1960s, although growth was minimal until the late 1990s.
Growth took place from the mid 1990s, with rapid development between 2001 and 2006, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Park Lake, the Canine Association of WA and one school.
