Shelley is bounded by the Canning River in the north and east, Barbican Street East, Tudor Avenue South, Tribute Street East, Modillion Avenue South, Corinthian Road East and the Leach Highway in the south, and Fifth Avenue, Houtmans Street, Koolan Drive, Michael Court, Denise Close, Ionic Street and Fifth Avenue in the west.
Shelley is thought to be named for the shells found on shores of the Canning River.
Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s.
Population was minimal until the early 1900s, with land used mainly for farming and market gardening.
Rapid growth took place during the 1960s and 1970s.
The population increased slightly from the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Shelley Hub (shopping centre), Corinthian Park Hall, Shelley Beach, Corinthian Park, Shelley/Rossmoyne Foreshore Park, Shelley Park, Vesta Park, Zenith Park and one school.
