Rockingham includes two separate geographic areas: Garden Island, and the suburbs of Peron and Rockingham. 

 

 

Garden Island is located just north of the western-most tip of the City of Rockingham, surrounded by the Indian Ocean, connected to the mainland by a causeway. 

 

The suburb of Rockingham is bounded by the Indian Ocean in the north, Governor Road, a line running between Governor Road and Ennis Avenue, and Ennis Avenue in the east, Rae Road and Garden Island Highway in the south and Boundary Road and the Indian Ocean in the west. 

 

 

Rockingham is named after a ship which brought settlers to the colony and ran aground on the beach which fronts the suburb. 

 

Settlement of the area dates from 1829, when Captain James Stirling landed at Garden Island with the new colony's first settlers. 

 

The township of Rockingham was established in the 1840s. 

 

Population was minimal until the 1890s, with Rockingham becoming an important port for the shipping of timber. 

 

Significant development did not occur until the 1960s, with rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s, aided by Garden Island becoming Australia's largest naval fleet and submarine base.

 

 

 

The population has continued to increase since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area. 

 

Population growth is expected to continue, particularly from the Rockingham Waterfront Village development. 

 

Major features of the area include Rockingham City Shopping Centre, Garden Island, HMAS Stirling (Fleet Base West), Murdoch University (Rockingham Campus), Challenger TAFE (Rockingham Campus), Rockingham Regional Campus Community Library, Rockingham Lakes Regional Park, Naragebup Regional Environment Centre, Rockingham Museum, Rockingham Art Gallery, Rockingham Aquatic Centre, Shoalwater Bay Marine Park, Palm Beach, Rockingham Beach, Peron Foreshore Park, Rockingham Foreshore Park, Mike Barnett Sports Complex, Lake Richmond, Anniversary Park, Bell Park, Bungaree Oval, Churchill Park, City Park, Rockingham Oval, Stan Twight Reserve, Council offices and numerous schools.
