Riverton is an established residential area.
Riverton is bounded by Barbican Street East and the Canning River in the north, the suburb of Ferndale and Bannister Creek in the east, High Road in the south, and the Leach Highway, Corinthian Road East, Modillion Avenue South, Tribute Street East and Tudor Avenue South in the west.
Riverton is named for its location – on the banks of the Canning River (with "ton" meaning a town).
Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming.
Population was minimal until land was subdivided in 1914.
Significant development did not occur until the post-war years.
Rapid growth took place during the 1960s and 1970s.
The population was relatively stable during the 1990s, and then increased slightly between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Riverton Leisureplex, Canning Arts Centre, Canning River Regional Park, Riverdrive Village Shoppping Centre, Ada Park, Adenia Park, Modillion Park, Montes Park, Nurdi Park, Parklands Park, Riverton Park and two schools.
