Port Kennedy is named after the port, which was named after Sir Arthur Edward Kennedy, former Governor of Western Australia. 
 
It was previously known as Becher. 
 
Development of the area dates primarily from the 1980s. 
 
Rapid growth took place from the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area. 
 
Population growth is expected to continue, primarily from the Kennedy Bay project, a tourist, commercial, residential and recreational development.
