Ocean Reef is a relatively recent residential area, with substantial parklands along the coast.
Ocean Reef is bounded by the suburb of Iluka and Shenton Avenue in the north, Marmion Avenue in the east, Ocean Reef Road, Oceanside Promenade and the suburb of Mullaloo in the south and the Indian Ocean in the west.
Ocean Reef is named for the line of reef offshore from Mullaloo.
It was previously known as Beaumaris.
Development of the area dates primarily from the 1970s.
Rapid growth took place during the 1980s, continuing into the early 1990s.
The population has been relatively stable since the mid 1990s, a result of some new dwellings being added to the area, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Major features of the area include Beaumaris City Shopping Centre, Ocean Reef Shopping Centre, Ocean Reef Boat Harbour, Beaumaris Park, Lexcen Park, Mirror Park, Ocean Reef Park, Santiago Park and numerous schools.
