Northbridge is a residential and commercial area which has experienced significant recent residential redevelopment.
Northbridge is bounded by Newcastle Street in the north, William Street in the east, Roe Street in the south and the Mitchell Freeway in the west.
Northbridge is named because it is just north of the Perth CBD, across the railway bridge.
Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for farming.
Growth took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
From the 1960s to the 1980s the population declined as residents moved outwards.
This trend began to be reversed from the mid 1990s, spurred by urban renewal and gentrification of the inner city.
Rapid growth took place from 1996, with the population doubling between 1996 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly from the New Northbridge (East Perth Redevelopment Authority) development.
Major features of the area include Russell Square, City Markets, The Northbridge Shopping Centre and Northbridge Plaza.
