Surrounded by the popular suburbs of Ashgrove, Wilston and Grange, Newmarket is only about four kilometres from Brisbane's CBD.

The suburb was established early in the development of Brisbane, mostly because it escaped a major flood in 1893. 

Once established it grew quickly, with the Newmarket railway station dating back to 1899.
