Murdoch is an established residential and institutional area, situated in the south of the City of Melville.
Murdoch is bounded by Somerville Boulevard, Murdoch Drive and South Street in the north, the Kwinana Freeway in the east, Farrington Road in the south, and Windelya Road, South Street and Prescott Drive in the west.
Murdoch is named after Murdoch University, which in turn was named after Sir Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch, Foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia.
Development of the area dates primarily from the post-war period, particularly from the 1970s and 1980s.
The population continued to increase during the early 1990s, with growth slowing from the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Murdoch University, Challenger TAFE (Murdoch Campus), Winthrop Baptist College, St John of God Hospital, Rangeview Remand Centre, Banksia Woodland Reserve and Chelodina Reserve.
