Melville is an established residential area, situated in the north-west of the City of Melville.
Melville is bounded by the Canning Highway in the north, Rome Road in the east, the Leach Highway in the south, and Stock Road in the west.
Melville is named after Lord Melville, First Lord of the Admiralty, 1812-1830.
Melville Water was named by Captain James Stirling in 1827.
Population was minimal until the late 1800s. Some growth took place in the 1920s when a small pocket of land was opened up adjacent to the Canning Highway.
The most significant development occurred from the 1950s.
The population has increased slightly since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Melville Recreation Centre, Melville Reserve and two schools.
