Maddington is named after an original property in the area, which was thought to be named after a suburb in London.
Settlement of the area dates from 1829, with land used mainly for farming.
Population was minimal the early 1900s, with land used largely for orchards and market gardens until growth in the post-war years.
Industrial growth took place in the 1960s, when the racecourse was redeveloped into an industrial estate.
Rapid residential development occurred during the 1970s and 1980s.
The population has been relatively stable since the mid 1990s, a result of some new dwellings being added to the area, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
