Head south out of Perth’s CBD over the Narrows Bridge and drive about 16km or so down the Kwinana Freeway and, off to your left, you’ll see the pleasant residential suburb of Leeming.
On its southern border is the general aviation training airport of Jandakot, a busy little place, continually buzzing with small aircraft.
You’ll also find the Melville Glades golf course at Leeming and, on the other side of the freeway, just 3km or so away, is Murdoch University, one of the country's youngest but very best.
The university's huge campus covers some 254ha in the heart of suburbia.
Named after the respected academic, essayist and former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, Sir Walter Murdoch, the university has grown from an initial intake in 1975 of 672 undergraduates to an enrolment of more than 11,000 today.
The only institution in the country to have scored five stars for graduate satisfaction from the Good Universities Guide for five years in a row, Murdoch has also been rated the best teaching campus of all Australia's public universities by an independent national survey of university graduates.
This high standing was enhanced by two awards in the Prime Minister's 1998 Australian Awards for University Teaching.
