Karrinyup is an established residential area.
Karrinyup is bounded by the Reid Highway and North Beach Road in the north, North Beach Road, Pascoe Street, Finnerty Street and Huntriss Road in the east, Newborough Street in the south and Elliott Road, the West Coast Highway and Marmion Avenue in the west.
Karrinyup is named from an Aboriginal word meaning “the place where kangaroos graze”.
Settlement of the area dates from the early 1840s when the first land grant was made.
Growth was minimal until the early 1900s.
Significant development occurred from 1957.
The population declined slightly during the 1990s, and then increased marginally between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Karrinyup Shopping Centre, Lake Karrinyup Country Club, Hamersley Golf Course, Trigg Bushland Reserve, Millington Reserve, Perth Bible College and a number of schools.
