Hillman is named after Alfred Hillman, one of the original surveyors of the Rockingham township.
East Rockingham is named for its location east of Rockingham, which is named after a ship.
Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s, although population was minimal until the late 1800s.
Significant development did not occur until the 1960s, with rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s.
The population has declined since the early 1990s, a result of little change in dwelling stock and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Major features of the area include the Golf Driving Range, Governor Road Reserve, Granary Museum, East Rockingham Cemetery and one school.
