Hillarys is bounded by Whitfords Avenue in the north, Marmion Avenue in the east, Hepburn Avenue, West Coast Drive and Southside Drive in the south and the Indian Ocean in the west.
Hillarys is named after Bertram John Hillary, an early resident of the area.
Settlement of the area dates from 1930, although growth was minimal until the 1970s.
Significant development occurred during the 1980s, spurred by the boat harbour development.
Rapid growth continued during the early 1990s, with expansion continuing from the mid 1990s, but at a slower rate, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Hillarys Boat Harbour, Whitford City Shopping Centre, The Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA), Rottnest Island Ferry Terminal, Em Halliday Recreation Camp, Broadbeach Park, Flinders Park, Hillarys Beach Park, Hillarys Park, Mawson Park, Hillarys Beach, Whitfords Beach and two schools.
