Settlement of the area dates from 1837 when the first land grant was made.

Land was used mainly for market gardens.

Growth was minimal until the late 1800s.

Significant development occurred during the post-war years.

Substantial growth took place in the western section from the early 1970s, with growth in the eastern section from the late 1970s into the 1980s.

The population declined from the early 1990s, a result of stability in dwelling stock and a decline in average household size.
