Gwelup is a still developing residential area.
Gwelup is bounded by Balcatta Road and Old Balcatta Road in the north, the Mitchell Freeway in the east, Karrinyup Road in the south and Huntriss Road, Finnerty Street, Pascoe Street and North Beach Road in the west.
Gwelup is named after Lake Gwelup, which is named from an Aboriginal word meaning “the lake that shifts position”.
Settlement of the area dates from 1831 when the first land grant was made.
Land was used mainly for market gardens. Growth was minimal until the 1890s.
Significant development occurred from the 1970s.
The population increased substantially from the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly from the Karrinyup Waters and Settlers Green developments.
The population trebled between 1991 and 2006.
Major features of the area include Lake Gwelup Reserve, Lake Gwelup, Lake Careniup, Gwelup Plaza and one school.
