The historic suburb of Guildford, about 20km east of Perth’s CBD, has some beautiful and historically important old homes and buildings, several excellent antique galleries and enough art galleries and bric-a-brac shops to absorb the most discerning collector.
The Courthouse and Old Gaol Museum collections at Guildford focus on colonial settlement of the historic town and its agricultural hinterland, the Swan Valley.
But it's only open on Sunday afternoons.
The original church where St Matthew's Church now stands was built in 1860 and destroyed by storm in 1872 during a christening.
Fortunately no one was injured.
The church standing today was built in 1873 with a moat surrounding it, which is still there, on three sides, at least.
It’s a short trip from Guildford into the delightful Swan Valley, which produces some of Australia’s finest wines, to the Darling Ranges, or into the John Forrest National Park - a rugged expanse of natural bush containing some delightful streams, waterfalls, safe swimming holes, picnicking and BBQ areas.
The nearby Mahogany Inn has been operating since 1837 and holds WA’s oldest liquor licence.
