Gidgegannup is a rural and rural residential area which has experienced recent growth. 
 
Gidgegannup is bounded by the Shires of Chittering and Toodyay in the north, the Shires of Toodyay and Mundaring in the east, the Shire of Mundaring and Toodyay Road in the south, and the locality of Herne Hill, Padbury Avenue, the localities of Millendon and Baskerville, Moore Road, Holstein Close, the Swan River, the localities of Upper Swan and Bullsbrook, the Avon River and the locality of Bullsbrook in the west. 
 
This small area includes the localities of Gidgegannup, Avon Valley National Park and Walyunga National Park, most of Brigadoon and Red Hill, and part of Baskerville. 
 
Gidgegannup is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "place where spears are made". 
 
Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s. 
 
Land was used mainly for farming, including horse studs, cattle grazing and fruit growing. 
 
In more recent years new farming uses include emus, alpacas, aquaculture, pecans, olives and goat cheese. 
 
Growth was minimal until the 1990s. 
 
The population increased from the early 1990s, with a doubling of residents between 1991 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area. 
 
Major features of the area include Avon Valley National Park, John Forrest National Park, Walyunga National Park, Darling Range Regional Park, Joshua Mews Bushland, Susannah Brook Reserve, Gidgegannup Showgrounds, State Equestrian Centre, Noble Falls and one school.
