Dianella is named after the small blue lily once found in the area.
Settlement of the area dates from 1829 when the first land grant was made.
Growth was minimal until the 1880s, with gradual expansion until the early 1900s.

The population has increased slightly since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
