History:
Named
almost by mistake, Deception Bay (sometimes abbreviated to D-Bay) located 32km
north of Brisbane was mistakenly thought to be a river by New South Wales
Surveyor, Lt. John Oxley in 1823 who had
initially called it Pumice Stone River.
Realizing his mistake, he changed the name to Deception Bay. Deception Bay separates’ the Redcliffe
peninsula and Bribie Island. During the
1980s and 1990s it was an area that was plagued by high crime rates and
unemployment due to a very high proportion of social housing, however these
community issues have subsided in recent years with the increased development
and population growth in the area. It is
now a thriving coastal suburb thanks to investment and development and is a
base for fishing trawlers off Moreton Bay and is a tourism center north ofBrisbane for tourists and day trippers looking to take advantage of the bay’s
relaxed and casual atmosphere. While Deception
Bay began as a seaside village overlooking shallow mud flats, with a couple of
houses to let, by the late 1950s its population began to grow, as accessibility
increased by the rise of private motor transport and the nearby Bruce Highway.
By the 1980s it had grown to become a substantial suburb in the Caboolture
Shire and the past few years has seen the beachfront area receive a major
re-design under the urban renewal program of the Queensland Government. Deception Bay also contains a new development
area – North Rise. Bayswater Resort is a
also currently under construction in the Moreton Downs Estate and neighboring
suburbs include Rothwell, Narangba and North Lakes. Deception Bay extends inland to the Bruce
Highway, providing extensive acreages for residential growth.
Dining & Food:
Deception
Bay has a good mix of eating and dining establishments catering for people of
all tastes and budgets. The obligatory
Asian restaurants are present – primarily Chinese – however there is also a
good mix of Italian, Indian and Pizza options available in addition to the cafés
and coffee clubs.
Shopping:
The Deception
Bay Shopping Centre is one of the area's major shopping complexes offering a
very good variety of shops for all requirements and needs. In addition, Westfield North Lakes is also only
a 10 minute car trip south providing even more choice.
Events & Outdoors:
There
are quite a few different events and activities to keep you occupied in
Deception Bay. Most of these are focused
in and around the music scene; however there is also a weekly farmers market in
Lake Eden which is just over a 10 minute drive away each Sunday during the
summer months.
Real Estate:
While
initially opened for selection in 1861, Deception Bay was not really settled
until 1881 when Dr Joseph Bancroft moved there with his wife and family. The
area was once large parcels of land supporting dairying and farming and, while
some large blocks remain today, most have been subdivided to provide housing
for a growing community. Streets close
to the water have low-set weatherboard homes on small blocks. Larger brick
homes on larger blocks are available away from the water.
Sports:
The
Deception Bay Bombers Rugby League Football Club and the Deception Bay PCYC
both consider the Deception Bay Sports centre as their home. In addition with its proximity to the water,
there are many water activities available for those interested in
partaking. Deception Bay also has a
variety of health and fitness facilities that are available to the public.
Transport:
Deception
Bay is located just of the Bruce Highway on Deception Bay Road and has extremely
good links into Brisbane (40 minutes south) and the Sunshine Coast.
Education:
Local
schools include Deception Bay State School, Deception Bay State High School,
Deception Bay North State School, Christ the King Catholic Primary School and
Moreton Downs State School. Deception
Bay State High School is a co-ed state run high school that services students
aged 8 to 12 and currently has an enrollment of 850. The Deception Bay North primary school opened
in 1979. It has State and Catholic primary schools (1892, 1979), a high school
(1992).
Landmarks:
To the North of
Deception Bay just before the Bruce Highway is the Freshwater National
Park. Deception Bay is bracketed to its
south by the North Lake Environmental Park.
Deception Bay's proximity to both Caboolture and Redcliffe means that it
is surrounded by areas which offer a relaxed, yet rich and diverse lifestyle,
with beautiful beaches and stunning mountain scenery -- all less than an hour
from Brisbane.
