History:

Deagon, named after one if its early mayors – William Deagon who served three terms from 1882-1884 – is located 16km north of central Brisbane and is bordered bySandgate, Taigum, Boondall and Bracken Ridge.  Deagon is on the Sandgate railway line and is partly separated from Sandgate by a series of lagoons and water reserves.  Chosen by the early residents of Sandgate as the location for their local racecourse, Deagon is an older area that has seen recent refurbishments and redevelopments on the foreshore and a shift in popularity towards younger family oriented communities.

Dining & Food:

With recent redevelopment of the foreshore and the increasing number of restaurants and cafés now calling Deagon home, there is always somewhere to go when you want a bite to eat.  Choices include Asian flavors – Chinese and Thai predominately – but also a good mix of Italian and Seafood establishments’.

Shopping:

In addition to Sandgate Shopping Center which is not too far from Deagon, there are also many other local shopping complexes in extremely close proximity providing residents of Deagon with many options and choices for all of their shopping needs.

Events & Outdoors:

A weekly (Sunday) market is held in the grounds of the Sandgate District High School.  This fruit and vegetable market is extremely well served and is quite a popular destination.   Deagon is also the home of the Deagon Wetlands.  This park includes a number of smaller wetland parks such as Deagon Wetlands Reserve, Third Lagoon, Dowse Lagoon, Einbunpin Reserve and Brighton Wetlands. Visitor facilities include picnic areas, walking circuits, barbecue facilities and play equipment.

Real Estate:

Deagon is an older area, made up predominantly of homes built post World War-1 with a few unit and townhouse complexes mixed in.  In the early 1900’s an inter-denominational church was built just east of the station and the suburb has continued to grow since this period.

Sports:

The Deagon Racecourse was established by the early inhabitants of Sandgate and were established in 1912 by Racing entrepreneur John Wren.  While races at the Deagon Racecourse were discontinued in 1941, it is an excellent training facility and is still used to this day to train horses; in fact, residents of Deagon are somewhat accustomed to the site of racing horses walking alongside the Deagon roadside.  The racecourse borders the Deagon Sports Ground, which incorporates the Albury Oval and other park activities and residents also have access to all of the foreshore activities in Sandgate andBrighton, as well as local yacht and golf clubs.

Transport:

Easily accessible from Sandgate Road and the Gateway Motorway, Deagon is also on the Sandgate railway line which was opened in 1882 and has three stations accessible by Deagon residents: North Boondall, Deagon, and Sandgate. In general the public transport within Deagon is also of exceptionally high quality with a variety of bus services available for residents including a dedicated school bus service.

Education:

The only school located within Deagon is Sandgate District High School; however Deagon residents are generally well catered for with a variety of primary and secondary institutions in very close proximity in the surrounding suburbs.  In addition the North Point Institute of TAFE is located at Bracken Ridge - with seven campuses and numerous delivery points servicing over 30,000 students across Brisbane's northside, Brisbane North Institute of TAFE is one of the largest institutes of its kind in the state.

A past alumnus of Sandgate District High School is television celebrity Kerri-Ann Kennerley.  In addition, international tennis player Wendy Turnbull OBE and Indigenous photographer Bill McBride were also past students at this school.

Landmarks:

The three halls are: The Hall of Three Purities, the Hall of Three Masters and the Hall of the Spiritual Garden. There is also a Memorial Hall of Ancestors.
