History:

Dakabin named from the Yugarabul Aboriginal language meaning grass tree or grass root, is currently a residential and industrial suburb located a little less than 30 km north of Brisbane – the state capital of Queensland - in the Pine Rivers Shire.  Dakabin started out extremely small – early census results had the population in 1921 being only 75 and by 1952 this had actually shrunk to 52.  In fact from 1954 – 2006 census data for Dakabin was included with the figures forKallangur and Murrumba Downs.  However 2006 census data had a population of 1275 for Dakabin, a significant leap forward! Originally a rural district until the early 1970s it was only later in the decade that urbanization truly took root as growth in the Pine Rivers Shire saw expansion from Petrie up towards Dakabin.

Dining & Food:

Dakabin has a good variety of local dining establishments in close proximity to the town center.  Choice include Chinese and Indian and there is also a Winery where you can sample the local brew.

Shopping:

The nearest major shopping center is Westfield North Lakes which is located a little under 10 km away in North Lakes, QLD.  This massive complex has a significant number of shops and offers almost every type of store or service available.  From shoe shops to watch shops, the choice is almost limitless and while this is the biggest and closest shopping complex to Dakabin, there are many other local centers in even closer proximity.

Events & Outdoors:

Dakabin has several notable outdoor attractions.  The most popular and well known of course is the Alma Park Zoo.  Set on a 20-acre plot  of land, this park contains many Australian, International, endangered and exotic species and also has a very scenic Tropical garden.  At Alma Park Zoo you can see over 50 different species and more than 230 different animals and can also touch and cuddle the Koala’s, Snakes and Crocodiles.  There are a variety of shows run throughout each day at Alma Park allowing you to also hand feed the Kangaroo’s and Deer.  In addition to the animals of course, restaurants and barbeque grounds are available for dining making this an extremely popular and fun family destination.

Real Estate:

An extremely popular area for families, Dakabin suburb is primarily comprised of single unit dwellings with the predominant style being brick and tile.  There is lots of room for new development in the area.

Sports:

Located in close proximity to Dakabin is the Lakeside International Raceway. This motor racing circuit is near Lake Kurwongbah and is considered by many to be the spiritual home of Queensland motorsport.  Lakeside International Raceway has been the home of the Australian Grand Prix on two occasions and has also hosted several other prominent events and was until quite recently a mainstay of the touring car circuit.  In recent years however Lakeside International has been reoriented towards more local racing and there are no ambitions for it to return to its former glory.

Transport:

Dakabin is on the North Coast railway line (1888), which defines the suburb's western boundary.  This line provides regular Citytrain services to Brisbane and Ipswich as well as Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast.  In addition a free daily shuttlebus service is available from the train station to Alma Park Zoo.

Education:

Dakabin has three schools in or in close proximity to the town comprising the Dakabin State School, The Dakabin State High School and the Northpine Christian College which caters for both primary and secondary students.  Dakabin State High School has an extensive Agricultural sciences program, allowing students to obtain a hands-on knowledge of animals and wildlife.  Northpine Christian College is owned and operated by the Seventh Day Adventist Church (South Queensland District) and has a sister college – Noosa Christian College at Cooroy approximately 1 hour north of Dakabin.

Landmarks:
In Old Gympie Road, Dakabin, there is the Pine Rivers Shire's rubbish dump, a facility distinguished by the recycling of electrical and other goods. Nearby, visitors and families can have a day outing at the Alma Park Zoo.
