Crawley is named after Anna Crawley, mother of Henry Charles Sutherland, an early land holder. 
 
Settlement of the area dates from 1837, with land used mainly for farming. 
 
Population was minimal until the 1850s. 
 
Rapid expansion took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. 
 
Significant development occurred in the interwar and post-war periods, spurred by the establishment of residential colleges and high-rise development from the 1960s. 
 
The population has declined slightly since the early 1990s. 
 
A major feature of the area is part of the University of Western Australia (Crawley Campus), including St Thomas More College and St George's College..
