Settlement of the area dates originally from 1838, with land used mainly for farming, and later limestone mining.
Development was minimal until the early 1980s.
Significant development occurred during the 1980s and early 1990s, spurred by the golf course and associated resort development.
Growth slowed during the late 1990s, with little change in population and dwelling stock between 2001 and 2006.
