Como is an established residential area.
Como is bounded by South Terrace in the north, Hayman Road and Kent Street in the east, Jackson Road, Henley Street, Ley Street and Gentilli Way in the south, and the Canning and Swan Rivers in the west.
Como is thought to be named after the first land owner, Hugh Comer, or after a lake in Italy.
Development of the area dates mainly from 1891 when the first land grants were made.
Gradual growth took place in the early 1900s, aided by subdivision from 1905, and the promotion of the beach as a popular place to live. Some development took place in the interwar period.
However, growth was slow due to the absence of good roads and unreliable public transport.
The most significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s.
The population has increased slightly since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Como Beach, Collier Park Golf Course, Collier Park, Neil McDougall Park, Penrhos College and a number of other schools.
