Settlement of the area dates from the late 1830s when the first land grant was made.
Growth was minimal until the late 1800s, with land used mainly for market gardens.
Significant development occurred from the 1960s, with substantial growth during the 1970s.
The population has declined since the early 1990s, a result of little change in dwelling stock and a decline in average household size.
