Byford - a small farmlet town on the South West Highway, about 37km south-east of Perth’s CBD - provides easy access to the delightful Serpentine Falls National Park, about 16km south, and its attendant Serpentine Dam.
As its name implies, the national park has some spectacular waterfalls and a couple of safe swimming holes amid its jarrah and marri forests, which sparkle with wildflowers in the spring.
It's a popular picnicking spot, with plenty of facilities to make your day more comfortable, especially around the falls area.
A few minutes’ drive to the north of Byford is the big town of Armadale where the Bert Tyler Vintage Machinery Museum and the Armadale Outpost Telegraph Centre - the only operating telegraphic messages centre in WA - are both worth a visit.
Also worth a look at in Armadale is the Minnawarra Historic Precinct, at the edge of lovely Minnawarra Park, which displays an old school and a church and has a museum preserving the area’s rich local history.
Admirers of The Bard will be in their element at the Elizabethan Village – a full-scale model of Shakespeare's birthplace and Anne Hathaway's cottage.
