Bicton is an established residential area, with a commercial area along the Canning Highway, situated in the north-west of the City of Melville.
Bicton is bounded by the Swan River in the north and north-east, Stock Road in the east, the Canning Highway in the south, and Petra Street in the west.
Bicton is named after a village in South Devon, England.
Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s when the first land grants were made, although growth was minimal until 1917 when land was subdivided.
Subdivisions continued in the 1920s.
The most significant development occurred in the post-war years.
The population increased slightly during the 1990s, and then was relatively stable between 2001 and 2006, a result of some new dwellings being added, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Major features of the area include Point Walter Golf Course, Melville Plaza, the retail area along Canning Highway, Point Walter Reserve and one school.
