Bateman is bounded by the Leach Highway in the north, the Kwinana Freeway in the east, South Street in the south, and Murdoch Drive in the west.
Bateman is named after the Bateman family, early landowners and merchants.
Settlement of the area dates from 1830, although growth was minimal until the 1880s.
The most significant development occurred from the early 1960s through to the 1970s.
The population has declined slightly since the mid 1990s, a result of little change in dwelling stock and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
