Balga is bounded by Beach Road in the north, Mirrabooka Avenue in the east, the Reid Highway in the south and Wanneroo Road in the west.

Balga is named from an Aboriginal word for the indigenous grass tree Xanthorrhoea.

Settlement of the area dates from 1840 when the first land grant was made.

Growth was minimal until the late 1800s, with land used mainly for market gardens and poultry farms.

Significant development occurred from the late 1950s into the early 1970s, aided by the construction of public housing.

The population has declined since the early 1990s, a result of a decline in dwelling stock and average household size.

Major features of the area include Swan TAFE (Balga Campus), Brian Burke Reserve, Celebration Park, Heritage Park and numerous schools.
