Balcatta is an established residential and industrial area, with industry located generally in the north.
Balcatta is bounded by the Reid Highway in the north, Wanneroo Road in the east, Morley Drive, North Beach Road, Karrinyup Road, Grindelford Drive, Veronica Parkway, Challenge Place, Jones Street, Poincaire Street, Cedric Street and Amelia Street in the south and Odin Drive, Erindale Road and the Mitchell Freeway in the west.
Balcatta is named from Aboriginal words meaning “his hill”.
Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s when the first land grants were made.
Growth was minimal until the 1870s and 1880s, with land used mainly for market gardening and farming.
Significant residential development occurred from the 1960s, with industrial growth from the 1970s.
The population has increased slightly since the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Northlands Plaza, Stirling Gate Shopping Centre, Graham Burkett Reserve, Macedonia Park, Richard Guelfi Reserve, Rickman Delawney Reserve and numerous schools.
