History:
The Auchenflower area saw its first development in the 1870s. After the division of a number of estates in the Milton and Toowong areas, Auchenflower began to emerge. The area obtained its name from the large manor built by Brisbane’s iron titan, John Ward, who later sold the house to Queensland’s premier, Thomas McIlwraith, who named it Auchenflower. This name is believed to originate in Scotland, describing wonderful fields of flowers.
A number of other settlers also helped the development of the area, although most of their contributions were unfortunately washed away by the floods of 1893. The town expanded on higher ground, however, and began to develop as a significant agricultural and residential suburb until the mid-1900s. At this point, Auchenflower grew and developed to incorporate the modern age into its structure and facilities.
Real Estate and Design:
Auchenflower is an inner city suburb, located just 3 km west of Brisbane’s CBD. As such, it has become a very attractive location to reside for a number of professionals wishing to remain close to work and a variety of social activities. As a result, Auchenflower has seen a significant increase of unit and flat development throughout its area, in order to accommodate the influx of population wishing to rent residences in central Brisbane. Auchenflower also has a number of homes in the area that range in style from the classic Queenslander colonial to more modern and sleek brick homes.
Shopping:
Auchenflower supports a number of retail properties, especially along Park Road, Toowong and Coronation Drive, which provide a wide variety of specialty stores, boutiques, supermarkets, banks and ATMs, and department stores. In addition, Auchenflower’s close location to the CBD and West End provides locals to an even broader array of shopping experiences for every taste within 15 minutes of home.
Sports and Fitness:
Several parks, including Dunbmore and Gregory Parks, provide a number of walkways and bike paths for a great afternoon stroll and fun recreation or for more intense physical training regimens. A number of sports clubs, including football, rugby and netball, are based in Auchenflower, as are a variety fitness centers, providing a wide variety of activities and pastimes for locals.
Distance from CBD & Transportation:
At only 3 km outside of the Brisbane CBD, Auchenflower, in addition to its many options of transportation, also provides its residents with the ability to go green and walk to their destinations if they so wish. The area also supports a number of main roads, such as Millon Road and the historical Coronation drive, that can be used to access interchanges that can reach any part of Brisbane. Brisbane’s transit system also provides a variety of options to Auchenflower residents for travel options. These include the 425 Chapel Hill express, 411 University of Queensland, 433 Kenmore South and 417 Long Pocket. The average time for these routes ranges between 10-15 minutes.
Famous Landmarks:
Most of Auchenflower’s construction and architecture is fairly new as Queensland history is concerned. This is due in large part to the recent development and urbanization that Auchenflower has seen. A great many of the original buildings have been moved to the historical areas of surrounding suburbs, such as a number of rooms from the Aucheflower House, today found in Tamborine Estate Winery of Beaudesert Shire. However, Auchenflower does maintain its original railway station, originally erected in 1887, and still used today by the Queensland Rail organization.
Restaurants and Cafés:
Auchenflower has a wonderful selection of restaurants and cuisine styles to choose from. The area includes a number of restaurants serving Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, traditional and modern Australian, Greek and even some South American selections to fit each and every desire. In addition, a wide variety of cafés and bakeries operate within Auchenflower providing refreshments and treats to locals, whether relaxing or on the go.
Schools, Education & Institutions:
Auchenflower is serviced by educational facilities ranging from state and Catholic primary schools to state high schools located in nearby Milton, Rainworth and Toowong. The University of Queensland is also only a short drive outside of Auchenflower, providing locals with every level of educational services that could be required.
