History:
Original land sales for the Aspley area are recorded as far back as the mid-1850s. The focal point of the area became the Royal Exchange Hotel on Gympie Road, which quickly developed to also include provisions for many local residents of the time. The construction of bone mills and other industries also added to the area’s economy and influx of more population.
By 1890, the first school and a number of churches had been erected. Growth continued over the next decades until the population reached over 400, which resulted in the construction of a public hall and Marchant Park. The area remained primarily rural farmland until the 1950s, when the more modern population and increased demand of the area demanded the development of more modern service facilities and infrastructure. Growth has continued into the modern day, and has resulted in the Aspley of today.
Real Estate and Design:
Aspley is a wonderful suburb within 13 km of Brisbane’s CBD. The majority of homes in the area are single detached houses, the larger share of which are owned or being purchased, as opposed to townhomes and units available for renting. These houses cover a broad range of architectural styles and periods, with a significant presence of two bedroom weatherboard houses to larger and more modern predominantly brick residences.
Shopping:
Aspley is home to Brisbane’s single Pick and Pay Hypermarket, a large shopping center that includes 60 plus specialty stores to meet the every need. These include a number of clothing retailers and boutiques, jewelry stores, travel centers, and home wares stores, to name just a few. The center also houses a wide variety of take away restaurants and cafés. Aspley also has a selection of smaller shopping centers, including the newly finished Aspley Village Shopping Center, filled with local groceries and convenience stores.
Sports and Fitness:
A number of local parks, including Harry Kirby Park, A and M Lehman Park and the Rotary park all provide Aspley residents with a wide variety of walking and biking trails to leisurely enjoy or exercise on. They also provide residents with enough space for a wonderful afternoon picnic and games afternoon or a bunch of friends the playing room they need for a good game of football or rugby. In addition, the nearby Australian Rules Football Club, known as the Aspley Hornets, is located on Graham Road.
Distance from CBD & Transportation:
Aspley lies approximately 13 km north of the Brisbane CBD. Most main traffic to and from the area is supported by the local thoroughfare, Gympie Road. The Brisbane transit system also provides a number of options for travel between the CBD and Aspley. These include the 330 Bracken Ridge Express and 345 Aspley Buz. Normal travel times for these routes range between 40 and 50 minutes, and run consistently throughout the weekdays. The nearby suburbs of Zillmere and Geebung also support train stations to service travellers to many stops.
Famous Landmarks:
Many of the original structures and roads exist throughout Aspley, showing the rich history of the region. These include Gympie Road, which was established upon an Aboriginal path. A number of famous buildings, including the Royal Exchange Hotel and Griffiths Sweets confectionary factory were subsequently opened in the area, thus developing a strong influx of residents, whose original homes can still be seen nestled throughout Aspley’s many neighborhoods.
