History:

                A number of genteel estates, most formed in the 1860s, were the initial structure of the Ashgrove area. A number of subsequent divisions of these estates led to the development of the first neighborhoods and subdivisions in the area. Some estates also became the Marist Brothers College and Woodlands, which are now entries on the Queensland heritage registers.

                Throughout the remaining 1800s and early 1900s the area continued to develop, including the increased and more rapid influx of residents. The area also established a number of churches, schools, colleges and services. By 1935 , the local tram service was extended to St Johns Wood, thus including the Waterworks Road area to easy transportation. Residential area also continued to develop northwards from the already existing neighborhoods, resulting in the formation of Oakleigh.

                After the war, Ashgrove became a substantial middle-class suburb. A number of families began to call the area home, and the resulting baby boom significantly increased the standard population. This led to the continued development of services and shops throughout the area, and the establishment of a number of recreational facilities and parks. Today, Ashgrove is a central location for growth, now containing a number of fantastic living places and supporting services.

Real Estate and Design:

                Ashgrove homes are comprised of several architectural periods, the most common of which is a Queenslander style developed during the interwar years, aptly known as “Ashgrovian.”These homes were developed as a solution for baby boom era families desirous of homes close to central Brisbane while still being economical. In addition, there are a number of brick and tile homes as well as a small percentage of units and townhomes as well.

Shopping:

                Ashgrove is home to a wide variety of shopping amenities. A number of shopping centers support the suburb, a few including Coles, Aldi and Woolworth supermarkets along with a variety of stores and businesses that provide a wide array of products and services to local residents.  These include a number of banks and ATMs, a post office, pharmacy, dry cleaners and several convenience stores as well. Nearby suburbs and districts also support larger shopping complexes with a variety of specialty stores for all needs, including the popular Paddington shopping district.

Sports and Fitness:

                The Ashgrove area is home to a number of parks with many walkways and bike paths for everyday leisure or fitness training. The Ithaca neighborhood also contains the home of the football club known as the Broncos. There are also a number of teams and clubs that paly at the Ashgrove Sports Ground, such as the GPS Rugby Football Club, Valley District Cricket Club. A local scouting club also meets in the Ashgrove and St Johns Wood areas.

Distance from CBD & Transportation:

                At only 5 km outside of the Brisbane CBD, Ashgrove provides its residents with a wonderful location close to the city without having to deal with a great amount of city traffic and noise. In fact, local residents commonly remark on how wonderfully quiet the area is, as is the short drive to be in the heart of Brisbane via the Waterworks Road. Brisbane’s transit system also runs a number of buses to the Ashgrove suburb consistently. These include the 379 West Ashgrove, as well as the 380 and 381 Gap routes. These public transit systems provide transportation between the CBD and Ashgrove with trip times between 15 and 25 minutes.

Famous Landmarks:

                A number of buildings in the Ashgrove area have historical significance. Several churches, including St. Finnbarrs Catholic, along with its school, and a Methodist church originally erected in the 1890s are listed on the Queensland historic register, and were updated in the 1950s and 1960s to provide increased longevity. The local Ashgrove Sports Ground, established in 1939 as the Ashgove golf course.

Restaurants and Cafés:

                Ashgrove has a wide variety of restaurants providing almost every selection of cuisine one could imagine. These include Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Indian and modern cuisine. There are also a good number of cafés and bakeries in the area that provide a wide selection of refreshments, delicious coffee mixes, and snacks for every sweet tooth.

Schools, Education & Institutions:

                Ashgrove is well serviced by a number of schools and educational facilities including the Ashgrove and Oakleigh State primary schools, several Catholic primary schools, a number of local high schools and the St. Michael’s Girls college and Marist College within the suburb. A number of surrounding suburbs also have a wide variety of educational options for all age groups.
