History:
The Ascot area began its development in earnest around 1829, first designated as a penal settlement. By the 1840s, however, the area had also grown to incorporate a large area for residential development. The area continued to develop asEagle Farm was bought out by the Queensland Turf Club for a future racecourse, which cause Eagle Farm to be move to Fort Lytton by 1893.
Continued desire to access the racecourse led to the development of the train station and tram line by 1899. As a result, the area continued to bolster a high rate of resident influx into the 1920s. The area also developed a number of services to accommodate the growing population.
The area grew slowly over the next several decades, until it was further spurred by the interwar housing initiatives throughout the Brisbane. A number of schools and churches also grew in the area, as did a number of recreational facilities, including the local pool, built in 1923. A racecourse was also developed, which became a part of the US troop camp, Camp Ascot.
Today, the racecourse has developed to include a modern shopping district. In addition, the Ascot area has also begun renovation of the local Bretts Wharf to become a high rise luxury and hospitality district. The Ascot Winter Carnival also adds to the history of the area, remembering the years of racing that have occurred at the racecourse.
