History:
Archerfield obtained its name from the local pastoral station, bought in 1881 by Michael Durack. Throughout its early years, Archerfield was a majority of rural area. However, in 1929, the Commonwealth bought a large area in Archerfield for the construction of Brisbane’s airport. The airport continued to be the central focus of the area, and its driving factor, expanding to include a number of industrial facilities as well.
During WWII, the airport expanded its normal role of being home to the Queensland aero club, and became a RAAF squadron base by 1939. This expanded the airport to include facilities for American bombers, administration facilities and expanded control tower. This growth slowed after the war, however, and by 1948, the Eagle Farm airport had become the central air stop for Brisbane.
In subsequent years, the Archerfield area continued to develop, but its focus centered more around housing and small industry to support the small airport. The majority of these industries are now located along Boniface Avenue and Beaudesert Road. The area also became home to the Archerfield Speedway, a popular attraction for all ages.
