History:

Originally developed in the mid 1800s, Annerley is believed to take its name from an English town. The area began with the licensing of a hotel, forming Annerley Junction, which eventually developed into a shopping center. Throughout the next number of years, the area continued to slowly develop, mostly in an agricultural degree.

By the 1880s , the agricultural means of the area began to focus on the dairy industry. This spurred the subsequent renovation and development of Annerley Junction, which was now home to a railway station, erected in 1884, a church, and a provisional school in 1888.

The area continued to grow slowly, until it was bolstered in a 1920s housing boom, supported by the post war service loans, resulted in a number of neighborhoods springing up throughout the area. By 1924, the population was large enough to build a theatre and Lunn’s Cake shop. Over then next few decades, neighborhoods continued to develop from the original estates until the late 1970s.
