History:

                Algester became a suburb of Brisbane in 1972, once it had detached from local Acacia Ridge.

The name is derived from the main road, originated around 1910, after Alcester, England. The area then developed to include a number of both domestic and foreign architectural styles throughout its many neighborhoods. The area was designated as all brick, and subsequent homes were developed in response.

                By the late 1970s , a number of shops and services had also sprung up in Algester.  These include the shopping center, a number of schools and churches. The area also is home to the Col Bennet Park, a memorial to local patronand barrister, Col Bennet.

Real Estate and Design:

                The Algester suburb provides a wide variety of architectural styles throughout its homes.  The majority of homes are comprised of a four bedroom structure, which includes a rumpus room and double garage.  There are also a descent representation of the Cape Cod, Mexican, Spanish and Queenslander colonial styles available. In addition to the excellent architecture, the roads of Algester are decorated by mature palm trees, as most of the power lines were installed below ground. Housing in Algester is primarily owned or being purchased, with a smaller percentage of renters, townhomes and units.

Shopping:

Algester is supported by a small shopping center off Ridgewood Drive.  Also, within very close proximity a wide variety of stores can be found in Sunnybank, Calamvale or Browns Plains. These centers all have a wide variety of stores for every taste including sporting stores, clothing stores and boutiques, travel centers, home supply stores, a number of banks and ATMs, pharmacies, and a variety of specialty stores.

Sports and Fitness:

                Col Bennet Park, so named after an ALP Member for southern Brisbane provides Algester with a wide variety of outdoor and physical activities. From taking a stroll to playing football or rugby with friends, Col Bennet Park is the perfect venue for an afternoon or a weekend outside.  Nearby suburbs also provide a number of clubs for all age groups and sporting activities.

Distance from CBD & Transportation:

                At only 18 km south of the CBD, Algester provides families and professionals a local suburb outside of the city traffic. The local Beaudesert Road provides direct access for vehicles between Algester and the CBD. The Brisbane transit system also provides options for transport between Algester and central Brisbane. The 130 Parkinson Buz makes consistent routes between the CBD and Algester with trip times of about 40-45 minutes.  There are also options with several transfers at a longer route time if one wishes to make stops in other districts between the CBD and Algester.

Famous Landmarks:

                Algester is surrounded by a number of historical sties.  As part of the Brisbane Agricultural Reserve and a development stemmed from Acacia Ridge, Algester has a wide variety of buildings and homes that delineate the history of returning veterans from WWII, and the subsequent housing and development boom that came shortly thereafter. The well maintained Col Bennet Park also provides wonderful share of history and insight to the area.

Restaurants and Cafés:

                The majority of restaurants and cafés in Algester are located near its small shopping center and along Ridgewood Drive. Nearby shopping centers also provide a wide selection. A number of bakeries and cafés are available for refreshing drinks and delectable treats, as are a number of restaurants with a variety of Chinese, Indian and Thai cuisine. These are just a few options one has to choose from to answer every taste and particular hunger in Algester.

Schools, Education & Institutions:

                Algester is supported by a State preschool and primary school, as well as a Catholic primary school on Ridgewood Drive.  In addition, the suburb is also nearby several state high schools and the Calamvale Community College, providing a wide variety of education for every level student.
