Ipswich is cementing its position as a Smart City as universities build a strong presence in the region.
University of Queensland (UQ) officially opened its state-of-the-art Auditorium, worth more than $5million, last week.
The 350-seat facility is the largest raked theatre in Ipswich, as well as the largest teaching space available on campus.
Ipswich was recently named one of only two Australian cities on the Intelligent Communities Smart 21 list.
Both UQ and University of Southern Queensland have expanding campuses in the Ipswich region.
UQ senior deputy vice chancellor Michael Keniger said the Auditorium would provide an effective link to the community, as well as a high quality learning space for the campus’ 1800 students.
“It shows our confidence and commitment to future growth. We are ambitious for the level of growth we believe can be sustained (in Ipswich),” he said.
Professor Keniger praised the accoustics and sightlines within the Auditorium, which also boasts the latest video conferencing and audio visual technology.
UQ pro vice chancellor Alan Rix said the 10-year-old campus was “relatively new”.
“The campus is expanding all the time, people are surprised when they see it,” he said.
A number of public events have already made use of the facility, including the Ipswich News Business Achievers Awards.
