The bathroom is no longer just a functional place but an area to kick back and relax after a hard day, says Bathrooms Are Us owner Randall Morrison.

“People are looking for ways to make their bathroom into a relaxing retreat away from everyday stresses,” Mr Morrison said.

This could be as simple as using LED lighting for a softer effect.

User-friendly bathroom products have also become a popular trend, with walk-in showers now one of the most sought-after products for the business, and heated towel rails also increasing in popularity.

Mr Morrison said the showers were easier to enter and exit, with a flat surface in favour of the more traditional step.

Heated towel rails may seem a surprise product given Queensland’s hot climate but Mr Morrison said the heated rail dried out and stabilised a bathroom in humid conditions, as well as effectively drying towels out.

White vanity tops are declining in popularity and products such as high gloss silkwood vanity tops are becoming more prevalent.

Design consultant and former managing editor of Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly magazine, Melanie Gardener, said maximising space was also a priority for many people renovating or building a home, with smart storage solutions high on the list of demands.

“People are tending towards the wellness centre/day spa feel for their bathrooms… a hideaway from the rest of the world,” she said.
